    Proseminar

All doctoral students in the program are required to participate in and successfully complete the annual Proseminar for the first three years (pre-Candidacy). The student receives one annual credit for each annual Proseminar.

The Proseminar is conceived as the program nexus where students can engage with, discuss, integrate and make meaning of their learning. The Proseminar is rooted in the core curricular themes and program requirements, and is based on students' emergent questions, faculty facilitated discussion, individualized study and collaborative inquiry.

Each year's Proseminar is comprised of a number of on-site sessions at the four residencies combined with online collaborative discussions between residencies. The Proseminar sessions held at the residencies lead into and prepare the students for the work of the Proseminar conducted on-line between residencies.

The expectation is that students will spend approximately 2-3 hours a week on Proseminar learning activities, including individual reading from the recommended list as well as additional research, posting/discussion, and the collaborative group project. The amount of time in Proseminar activities at any residency will differ.
