The Ph.D. Program holds academic honesty as one of its highest values. Plagiarism is a violation of the principle of intellectual integrity and inquiry and as such, is taken seriously when it occurs. Plagiarism is the representation of someone else's writing, research, or ideas as one's own. At the doctoral level, such behavior is completely unacceptable. The consequences of plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty may result in a range of consequences, including non-acceptance of the work submitted, verbal or written reprimand, and suspension or withdrawal.
Student
If an instance of academic dishonesty or plagiarism is suspected to have occurred by a student, the faculty member should speak directly with the student and obtain pertinent information. Students are encouraged to keep all drafts and notes pertinent to the development of a paper, demonstration of competencies, the organizational change project and dissertation. In this way, a student can best resolve the faculty member's uncertainty by presenting copies of notes, work in progress as stored on a computer, drafts of papers, and the like.
If the situation is not resolved, and the faculty member believes plagiarism has occurred, s/he must report the case to the Program Director.
If the accused person acknowledges that s/he has violated the policy on academic dishonesty, the Program Director will determine a sanction. Sanctions may range from oral or written reprimand to suspension, expulsion, or discontinuance of employment, depending upon the severity of the case. A record of the sanction will be placed in the file of the accused person. In this case, the Program Director's decision and sanction is final.
If the accused person denies the charge and the Program Director agrees with the denial, the matter shall be dropped.
If the accused person denies the allegation, but the Program Director believes that an instance of academic dishonesty may have occurred, the Director will designate a senior member of the faculty to investigate the allegation. Based on the designee's determination, if the charge is upheld, the designee will recommend a sanction from the same range as was available to the Program Director. If the charge is not upheld, it will be dismissed and no record of it will be included in the accused person's file.
If an accused person believes that the designee's determination and sanction is not correct, s/he may appeal to the Program Director, whose decision is final.
